Hyperuricemia: What You Need To Know

Our lifestyles have a big effect on our body and mind, and researchers and health-experts are fully aware of the link between good habits and practices, and better living standards.

Today we will be delving into Hyperuricemia, or high uric acid concentrations in the body and how it negatively impacts our health.

Symptoms of Hyperuricemia

When uric acid builds up in your bloodstream, it can open the door to a whole host of negative health impacts. Researchers have noted that people with high uric acid levels have a lower quality of life.

Hyperuricemia can go undetected for long periods of time, before showing up as intense pain in the joints. Overtime this can lead to:

  • Metabolic disorders

  • Heart conditions

  • Gout

  • Diabetes

  • Inflammation

Uric acid overload in the body is the main cause of Hyperuricemia, but what leads to elevated uric acid levels?

High Purine Foods

Researchers from Nature have identified that high purine foods such as organ meats, red meat, seafood (like anchovies, sardines, and shellfish), and chicken are directly linked to increased uric acid content in the body.

It is therefore advised for people suffering with gout, diabetes, and Hyperuricemia to avoid their intake of such foods.

Alcohol & Sweet Drinks

Another culprit of Hyperuricemia is alcohol. While it may taste bitter, and you might assume they are not acidic; alcohol causes pH levels to drop below normal levels in the gut, creating an acidic and toxic environment for your stomach. Over time this makes your internal systems more acidic, leading to inflammation and eventually Hyperuricemia.

And it’s not just alcohol, but high-fructose juices. Sweetened drinks often leave a sour taste in the mouth. This is directly correlated with how it affects your body. Juices that have too much artificial sweeteners in them can also raise the acidity level in your body. It is therefore advised for people healing from injuries or muscle soreness from exercise to avoid sweetened drinks.

Obesity

Among being linked to other health problems, the researchers also noticed that individuals with high uric acid levels also tended to be obese. Obesity leads to a whole host of health problems, such as increased heart failure risk and diabetes.

Obese individuals have a more acidic internal environment in their bodies due to high-caloric intake.

How You Can Combat This

To manage or overcome hyperuricemia, lifestyle modifications are foundational. Reducing intake of high-purine foods (e.g. organ meats, certain seafood) and fructose-sweetened beverages, moderating alcohol, and achieving healthy body weight are essential steps.

Emerging evidence also highlights the gut microbiome as a target: certain bacteria express uricase (the enzyme humans lack) or modulate intestinal UA excretion, suggesting probiotics or dietary fibers may help. And as we discussed in previous articles, that means upping your plant intake!

Together, combining healthy habits with tailored medical therapy may help restore uric acid balance and reduce the risks of gout, kidney disease, and cardiovascular complications.
