Sitting Too Long Can Harm Your Liver!
Many of us spend long hours sitting every day. Whether it’s at work, during long drives, or while relaxing at home, sitting has become a big part of modern life. But did you know that too much sitting may increase your risk of liver disease?
Recent research shows that sitting for long periods can quietly damage your liver over time. This is a serious concern, especially for people who do not move much throughout the day.

Sitting For Too Long: What’s the Risk?
When you sit for hours without moving, your body burns less energy. Over time, this can lead to weight gain, high blood sugar, and more fat stored in your liver. This extra fat can cause a condition known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease or NAFLD. It is now one of the most common liver problems in the world, even among people who do not drink alcohol.
A study published on Live Science highlights that people who sit for long hours each day are more likely to develop NAFLD compared to those who move more often. Even if you exercise for an hour in the evening, it may not fully undo the damage caused by sitting the whole day.

The Danger of Being Sedentary
Many people think liver disease only affects drinkers or those with poor diets. But that’s not true. According to research from the Journal of General Internal Medicine, a sedentary lifestyle is a clear risk factor. The study showed that people who spent most of their day sitting had a higher chance of developing liver disease, regardless of other health conditions.
Another article from the National Library of Medicine also found that people with low levels of daily physical activity had higher levels of liver enzymes. This means their liver may already be under stress or damaged, even if they feel fine.

What You Can Do About It
The good news is that small changes can make a big difference. You don’t have to run a marathon. Just breaking up your sitting time can help. For example:
Stand up and stretch every 30 minutes
Walk around your house during TV ads
Use a standing desk if possible
Take the stairs instead of the lift
Go for short walks after meals
These simple habits can help your body use energy better and reduce fat build-up in the liver.

Staying Active
Sitting too long might seem harmless, but over time it can lead to serious health problems like liver disease. In Malaysia, where office jobs and long hours are common, we need to take this issue seriously. Adding more movement into your day is a simple step that protects your liver and keeps your whole body healthier.
