Why Drinking Sugar Is Worse Than Eating It

Higher Blood Sugar Spikes

When you drink sugar for example in soda fruit juice or sweetened coffee your body absorbs it very fast This causes a sharp rise in blood sugar levels Your pancreas then has to work hard to release insulin to bring the sugar level down

This fast spike and drop can damage your body over time and increase your risk of type 2 diabetes. One study from Brigham Young University (BYU) in the US found that people who drank sugary drinks had a much higher chance of developing diabetes than those who ate sugar in food form

“Drinking sugar is more problematic for your body than eating it,” says Dr Karen Della Corte, lead author of the study and BYU nutrition science professor.

Liquid Sugar Overloads the Liver

Sugary drinks are often high in fructose a type of sugar that is processed mainly by the liver When you drink fructose it reaches the liver quickly in a large amount Unlike solid foods which take longer to digest the liver gets overwhelmed

This can lead to the buildup of fat in the liver which increases the risk of fatty liver disease insulin resistance and high cholesterol

In a study published on PubMed, researchers explained that this quick flood of fructose from drinks causes the liver to produce more fat which can harm your health over time

Sweet Drinks Make You Feel Less Full

Another big problem is that sweet drinks do not make you feel full the way food does When you eat sugar in solid food your body takes more time to chew digest and absorb it You feel more satisfied and are less likely to eat more later

But when you drink sugar your brain does not register the same level of fullness As a result you may end up eating just as much food later plus the calories from the drink This leads to extra calorie intake and weight gain

Science Focus reports that drinking sugar was linked to a 25 percent higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes while eating the same amount of sugar in solid food was not

Drinking Sugar Changes How Your Gut Works

Recent research also shows that drinking sugar can change how your gut absorbs nutrients Drinking sugary drinks increases sugar transporters in your intestine This means your body becomes better at absorbing sugar but worse at absorbing other nutrients like protein and fat

This change may increase the risk of metabolic problems like insulin resistance and unhealthy weight gain over time

Healthy Tips On Reducing Sugary Drinks

  • Choose water, plain tea with no sugar, or Kopi O kosong instead of sweet drinks

  • If you want something sweet eat fruits instead of drinking sugary drinks

  • Read labels and watch out for sugar content in fruit juice yogurt drinks and energy drinks

Remember it is not just how much sugar you take but how you take it. Drinking sugar causes more harm than eating it
