Why Exercise Is More Powerful Than Drugs For Cancer Treatment

If you or someone you love has gone through cancer treatment, you know the journey doesn’t end after the last chemo session.

The big question that comes after is this: how can we stop the cancer from coming back? Many people think the answer lies in more medicine, drugs and trips to the doctor. But now, a surprising new study has found something better: and it's something you can do without a prescription!

It turns out that simply moving your body through regular exercise might be one of the most powerful tools to help keep cancer away for good.

What the Study Found

A major international study has just changed the way we think about cancer recovery. Researchers followed more than 1500 colon cancer patients from 11 different countries. Everyone in the study had finished chemotherapy. After that, some were given extra medicine. Others were told to follow a structured exercise plan.

The results were shocking. Exercise worked better than medicine. People who exercised had:

  • 25% lower risk of dying

  • 30% lower chance of cancer coming back

Even the doctors were surprised. They now believe that exercise could be one of the most powerful tools in cancer recovery. One expert even said, “Exercise is the most powerful drug we have.”

Why Exercise Works Better Than Drugs

Many medicines used after cancer treatment come with side effects. Some cause nausea. Others weaken the immune system or lead to other health problems.

But exercise works in a different way. It:

  • Boosts the immune system

  • Increases strength and energy

  • Reduces inflammation

  • Improves mood and sleep

It helps the body heal itself. And it does this without harmful side effects. It is natural, safe, and affordable.

You Don’t Have to Be a Gym Addict

One of the best things about this study is that the exercise plan wasn’t extreme. Patients didn’t have to lift heavy weights or run marathons. They were asked to follow basic routines:

  • Brisk walking

  • Light cycling

  • Home-based strength training

Just 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise (that’s around 30 minutes a day for 5 days) is enough to give strong results.

This is something most people in Malaysia can do! You can start by walking in the taman, cycling with friends, or even doing light workouts at home. The key is to stay consistent.

A New Way to Think About Recovery

This research gives us a new way to think about what “treatment” means. It is not just about taking pills or getting injections. It’s also about lifestyle. Exercise isn’t just a bonus — it should be part of the main plan.

In many hospitals today, patients get medicine, then go home and rest. But now doctors are saying rest is not enough. The body needs movement to heal. A proper exercise routine can be more important than follow-up medication.

This could be a game-changer, especially in countries like Malaysia, where cancer rates are rising. We need recovery plans that are low-cost, safe, and effective. Exercise ticks all the boxes.

What Malaysians Should Know

Malaysia has an active lifestyle culture in many ways — from morning walks at the park or High-Intensity Interval activities. But many still believe that rest means lying in bed or sitting still.

If you are a cancer survivor, or if someone in your family is, it’s time to change that mindset. Talk to your doctor or oncologist about adding regular physical activity into your recovery plan.

Even small steps matter. Starting slow is fine. What matters most is moving your body often.

Movement Is Medicine

This study proves what some doctors and physiotherapists have said for years — exercise is not just about looking good or staying fit. It’s real medicine. For cancer survivors, it could be life-saving.

We hope to see more hospitals in Malaysia prescribing exercise the same way they prescribe pills. And we hope more people will see walking, stretching, and moving as powerful tools in the fight against cancer.
