Working Night Shifts? This Simple Trick Could Boost Your Metabolism!
Some of us work late shifts to handle tasks that can’t be done during the day. However, did you know that late night snacking habits could hurt your metabolism, ESPECIALLY if you’re working a night shift?

Messing With The Clock
Your body and mind are actually attuned to a biological clock known as the circadian rhythm. This clock is a network of systems in the body that helps keep us awake during the day and makes us sleepier during the night
According the Dr. Roger Sehuelt, a late shift is already considered taxing on the human body, as it causes a misalignment of the biological clock. Late shift workers have to adapt to this change, and some might even be at higher risk for heart disease.
A late shift can be made worse with late night snacking, but let us first understand why metabolism is important.

Why The Body Needs Good Metabolism
Metabolism is essential for repairing and maintaining the body, it involves 2 processes:
Catabolism: the breaking down of food and drink to release energy
Anabolism: the making of new compounds for repairing the body
Various toxins in our everyday environment, such as those from cleaning products can slow down metabolism, making the body more vulnerable to injury or disease. The same can be true for unhealthy practices.

Unhealthy Combinations
Mixing late shifts with late night snacking is a dangerous combination for the body. Where late shifts are taxing to the heart, late night snacking impairs glucose tolerance, leading to blood sugar buildup.
High blood sugar from late night snacking can lead to a whole host of health problems, such as: inflammaging, diabetes, jaundice and metabolic disorders.
When metabolism is impaired, this can lead to improper breakdown of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, leading to too little or too much compounds in the body.
Those with metabolic disorders may find it difficult to lose or gain weight, and may feel more exhausted.

The Simple Solution?
According to research, having meals during the day instead of the night was found to have significant benefits to glucose levels.
Researcher Sarah Chellappa, MD, MPH, PhD found that participants who switched to day-time meals and avoided late night snacking had a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

Timing Matters
Adjusting the timing of when you eat can make a big difference on your health! Studies are showing that breakfast is the most important meal, and that late night snacking is harmful for health.
So the next time you feel late-night cravings, remember to readjust your meal plan for the next day!
